Here are 3 easy steps to a simple and effective learning exercise

Mastering French verbs becomes far more easier when you focus on one clear, repeatable method.
The following exercise helps you understand patterns, build confidence, and quickly improve your ability to use tenses naturally in everyday communication.
One of the most effective ways to memorise and use French tenses is to work with a small set of verbs and practise them consistently. You don’t need long lists or complicated charts—just a handful of Bristol cards and a smart method that trains your memory naturally. So here is a simple tip on how to learn French tenses and conjugation.
Step 1 - Prepare your Bristol cards

Choose a few verbs from each group, for example:
First group (ER): parler, aimer, regarder
Second group (IR): finir, choisir, réussir
Third group (irregular verbs): faire, aller, prendre, venir, boire
Write one verb per card, clearly and simply. Make it easy to read. You can use different colours for each tense or underline them.
Step 2 - Conjugate each verb in key tenses cards
On each card, conjugate the selected verb in the following tenses:
Présent (de l'indicatif)
Futur simple
Imparfait
Passé composé
Impératif (optional but very useful)
Colour each tense: we suggest you add a bit of colour (e.g., blue for présent, green for futur, red for imparfait, ...) or underline each tense for clarity.
Don’t try to analyse every rule. Simply focus on patterns like:
the endings,
the rhythm,
the structure.
Your brain learns best through repetition, not theoretical explanations.
Step 3 - Practise them regularly

Look at your cards every day, even for just five minutes. Ideally, do this in the morning, as it’s the best time for the brain to absorb and retain information.
Say the conjugations out loud. Mix the cards, test yourself, or ask someone to quiz you.
Why this exercise works so well ?
By repeating a small number of verbs across several tenses your brain begins to:
recognise terminaison patterns
understand how tenses form naturally
memorise high-frequency verbs
predict how new verbs are conjugated
French conjugation is much simpler than it seems, really.
It’s all about familiarity. Once your brain has “imprinted” these patterns, you will be able to conjugate dozens of new verbs with ease. You can also add the number of new verbs you want on these cards, you will learn and memorise them easily.
